Lovers Burn to Death in Fiery Fire that Engulfed Their Home (Photo)

Two lovers have died a painful death after they were burnt to death at their homes while sleeping together.  

When Hendrick Matome met Betty Maphanga five years ago, it was love at first sight, but the two didn't know that they would meet an ugly end.

According to DailySun ZA, in the early hours of Sunday morning the couple’s big plans for the future went up in flames when they burned to death in a fire. The two identified as Hendrick (46) and Betty (42) had been living together for four years on a plot in Eikenhof, Joburg and planned to get married.

Hendrick had planned to start lobola negotiations for Betty this Saturday. Betty and Hendrick were fast asleep when the flames crept up on them and devoured them. It’s not known what caused the fire but both their families demand answers.

Betty’s uncle, Steven Maphanga, said: “What has happened is a tragedy for all of us. This week, we were supposed to meet the Matome family for a good purpose. Now we will be united through death.”

“Betty and Hendrick were living like animals in a small room but they were planning to better their lives. We think maybe they were trying to get warm and forgot to switch off the stove. They died in such a cruel way but they will be remembered forever.”

Hendrick’s brother, Kingsley Makgato, said he last spoke to his brother on the day he died.

“He was a very special man with a good heart. What happened to him really disturbs the family. Hendrick’s remains were found near the door and we are convinced he was trying to open it. He had great plans for Betty.”

An inquest docket was opened at De Deur Police Station and cops are investigating.
